Checking tyre pressure: why it matters more than you think

Tyre pressure is one of the most underestimated parts of car maintenance. Yet incorrect pressure directly affects your safety, fuel consumption, and the lifespan of your tyres.
Why is correct tyre pressure so important?
When pressure is too low, rolling resistance with the road increases, causing more wear, higher fuel consumption, and a longer braking distance. When pressure is too high, the grip surface decreases, negatively affecting road holding and safety.
How often should you check the pressure?
We recommend at least once a month and always before a long trip. Tyre pressure naturally drops over time, and temperature fluctuations also affect the pressure in your tyres.
What is the correct pressure?
The recommended tyre pressure for your car can be found on a sticker in the door frame, the fuel cap, or the owner's manual. Note: this value can differ between front and rear tyres, and under full load.
Signs of incorrect tyre pressure
Uneven wear on the inner or outer edge of the tread, a vibrating steering wheel, or a car that pulls to one side are all signs that tyre pressure or alignment needs checking.
At Car Service Rotterdam we check tyre pressure for free with every tyre service and advise you on the correct values for your car. View our tyre service.
